The standards of ethical and professional standards of practice reflect a shared understanding among all educators at Nile Valley School of the importance and need of and for professional behaviour within the profession – one that is dedicated to the nurturing of the student as a whole individual.

The standards serve as the foundation of the school’s ethos and they describe the professional beliefs and values that are unique to the teaching profession. They guide teachers in their professional judgement, decision making and conduct in their varied roles and relationships.

These core ethical standards are embedded in Nile Valley School’s performance management appraisal process, the Teacher Performance Appraisal (TPA) that is used to assess professional practice standards and to ensure excellence in teaching practice through the following teaching competencies:

• Professional Knowledge;
• Professional Practice;
• Leadership in Learning; and
• Ongoing Professional Learning


These competencies describe the continuum of knowledge, skills and professional practices of Nile Valley School teachers. Moreover, the standards provide teachers with a collective professional identify as all Nile Valley School educators will strive to be:

• Caring role models and mentors committed to student success and the love of learning;
• Ethical decision makers who demonstrate responsible and sound professional judgment at all times;
• Critical reflective practitioners who consistently participate in a personal systematic cycle of review of his/her professional practice in an ongoing effort to enhance and refine his/her performance;
• Collaborative team members and leaders in learning communities; and
• Responsive practitioners to the needs of all learners and respectful of equity and diversity within Nile Valley School.
